»Kontrapunkte – Tschaikowsky und Brahms«

First Opening: Juli 10, 2015

The exhibition “Counterpoints: Tchaikovsky and Brahms” presents two 19th century artist figures who could scarcely differ more from one another: Peter Tchaikovsky and Johannes Brahms. Although neither composer enjoyed the music of the other, they treasured one another personally, as shown by the encounters in 1888 in Leipzig and Hamburg. “After the rehearsal we lunched together and drank copiously. Brahms is very pleasant, I enjoy his great openness and simplicity”, Tchaikovsky wrote to his brother Modest.

With important exhibits, including letters, prints, programs, busts, and photographs, the show traced Tchaikovsky’s stays in German cities. The exhibition’s focus was placed on a New Year’s encounter from 1888 with Brahms and Grieg in Leipzig, Tchaikovsky’s several-day stay in Lübeck and German premieres of the Fifth Symphony in Hamburg with the composer himself at the podium. In addition, the two violin concertos written at the same time were compared. Feared Vienna music critic Eduard Hanslick, a supporter of Brahms, wrote of the Russian composer that “there is also music that sounds foul”.

Two composers who left important marks on both Brahms and Tchaikovsky offer interesting points of comparison: Robert Schumann and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Brahms engaged with Mozart’s music as a performer, collector, and editor. Tchaikovsky referred quite openly to Mozart in several compositions: “The fact that I dedicated my life to music is something I thank Mozart for”.

The show emerged as part of the composer focus of SHMF 2015 and the Tchaikovsky conference “Grenzenlos? Peter Tschaikowsky in Deutschland”.
